Richard Hubbell

d. May 28, 2012

Richard E. Hubbell of 18 Rothermich Rd., Enfield, after several years of declining health, passed away peacefully at Cayuga Medical Center on Monday, May 28, 2012 at the age of 85.

Born in his parents’ Enfield farmhouse on March 18, 1927, Richard was the son of Raymond and Hilda (Jones) Hubbell. Applying the lessons of hard work instilled in him from an early age on his parents’ farm, and embracing life with a good nature, he tended his wife’s family farm land in conjunction with other occupations over the years. He drove a Readymix Concrete truck for Rumsey Ithaca and University Sand and Gravel. He then worked for several years and retired from the Town of Enfield Highway Department. After retirement from the Town he also worked for Landstrom Gravel.

Richard developed many friendships through membership in the Trumansburg American Legion Post #770, the former Enfield United Methodist Church, the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church and the Enfield Valley Grange #295. He was a devoted NY Yankees fan, and loved the many dogs and cats that the family acquired over the years. The most heartwarming memories for Richard were those created in and around the big pond on the farm where he built a picnic area for the gathering of family and friends. This pond-on-the-hill was surrounded by impeccable lawns meticulously tended by Richard and his granddaughters. It was here that stories had their beginnings and grandchildren learned to swim. Richard will continue to live in the hearts of those who shared time with him.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Stark and Katherine Walker, and a brother, Alan. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Irene; two daughters, Ellen Seeley of Enfield and Laurie J. Hubbell of Trumansburg; two sons, Richard D. of West Danby and James W. of Enfield; five grandchildren, James “Jay” and Christopher Hubbell, Kathleen Seeley and Elisabeth and Mollie Seamon; four brothers, his twin Roger, Charles, Jon and Michael all of Enfield; four sisters, Carol Salino and Virginia Hall of Enfield, Marcia Knight of Ithaca and Nancy Breen of Newfield, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg. Services will begin at 11:00 am on Friday, June 1st at the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church with the Rev. Enid Zollweg officiating. Prayers of Committal will follow at Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg.

Those who wish to remember Richard in the form of a contribution are asked to kindly consider the Franziska Racker Centers (in the memo of your check please write “Making Room Campaign”), 3226 Wilkins Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Jacksonville Community UMC, P.O. Box 244, Jacksonville, NY 14854.

The family would like to thank the 4th floor and ICU staff at Cayuga Medical Center for the care and compassion extended to Richard during his time there.
