Richard J. Stoughton

d. November 30, 2017

Richard J. “Dick” Stoughton of Trumansburg, beloved husband, father, grandfather and stepfather, died Nov. 30, 2017, at the age of 90.

Dick was born April 2, 1927 in Ithaca, son of the late Ernest and Rosamond Stoughton, and attended Trumansburg Central Schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged. He returned home and was a farmer and laborer during his working life. In his “retirement” years, he stayed active delivering coal and fuel oil for Bowers Fuel Co., maintaining the grounds of Old Covert Cemetery and Sheldrake Cemetery, and tending to vegetable and flower gardens with his wife, Fran.

Sports was one of Dick’s passions, whether it was following the Yankees, the Cavaliers, SU basketball, IC football or watching his children and grandchildren. His love of family, friends, community and sports was ever-present. “Grandpa Dick” was a devout Blue Raiders fan, but “learned” to love rival South Seneca when three of his grandsons wore the Falcons’ Black and Gold. He also sported the Maroon and White of Johnson City when cheering on his grandchildren in lacrosse, cross country and Special Olympics.

Dick owned draft horses for many years, and was a member of the New York State Horse Pullers Association. With good friend Bill Fisher, he enjoyed traveling to horse pulls in New York and northern Pennsylvania, as both a competitor and a spectator.

Dick is survived by his wife of 25 years, Frances H. Stoughton; children Jeffrey (Denise) Stoughton of Johnson City, NY; Susan (Thomas) Fleischman of Jacksonville, NY; and Shelley (Michael) Johndrew of Ovid, NY; grandchildren Jessica, Sarah and Matthew Stoughton and Ricky, Joey and Andy Johndrew; stepchildren Michelle Newhart (Donna Atkinson) and Scott (Kristina) Newhart; step-grandchildren Tyler and Ryan Smith, Micah (David) Van Ness, Elissa (Johnnie) Newton and Jacob Newhart; step-great-grandchildren Maria Newton and Alena Van Ness; and a nephew, Timothy Stoughton of Williamsport, TN. Dick was predeceased by his brother, Francis.

A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at noon on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at St. James Cemetery in Trumansburg. From 1-3 p.m., the family will receive friends, with fellowship, at the American Legion Post 770 in Trumansburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ulysses Historical Society or the Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Company.
