Robert E. Bennett

d. November 5, 2015

Robert E. “Bob” Bennett of Trumansburg passed away at the Old Hundred on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the age of 88.

Bob was born in Ithaca on December 14, 1927, a son of the late Levi and Anna (O’Brien) Bennett. He was a graduate of the Trumansburg High School Class of 1945 and attended Morrisville College, graduating with his Associates Degree in 1952. Bob worked his entire professional career at Trumansburg Telephone Company, retiring after over 30 years of service.

Bob was a member of several bowling leagues over the years and also enjoyed playing horseshoes. An outdoor lover, Bob spent many hours gardening and had a love of animals, particularly dogs and horses. It is often said you can easily judge the character of man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him, and Bob’s kindness to countless animals through the years is a testament to that. Some of his last words to Patti were about making sure Molly, the latest 4-legged love of his life, was being well-taken care of. Bob’s character was also on full display during the last years of Connie’s life, as he was devoted to her care and comfort during her extended illness. His membership in the Ithaca Elks Club and St. James Catholic Church also brought meaning, purpose, and happiness to his life.

Bob enjoyed music and song. He sang in many musicals at Trumansburg High School, he sang in the church choir, and some of his fondest memories were of his participation in various barbershop quartets.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Patti (Steve) Riddle; brothers, Tom Bennett and Don (Marge) Bennett; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife Connie Bennett in 2010; sister and brother in law Audrey and Bob Ball; and sister in law, Joyce Bennett.

The family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am on Friday, November 13, 2015 at St. James Catholic Church, 17 Whig Street, Trumansburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks those to kindly consider making a contribution in Bob’s memory to the Tompkins County SPCA, 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Lastly, the family extends their deep appreciation to the entire staff of the Old Hundred. Their care and compassion for Bob, Patti, and Steve was an immeasurable source of comfort. Bob spent his final days being sung to, knowing he mattered, and knowing he was loved.
