Roy E. Flemming

d. December 26, 2014

Roy E. Flemming of Trumansburg passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Friday, December 26, 2014 at the age of 84.

Roy was born on January 24, 1930 in Gasport, New York, a son of the late Elmer and Blanche (VanBuren) Flemming. Due to the fact that Roy lived out in the country on his grandparent’s farm and in addition to being with his grandfather every day, these experiences truly instilled in him the love of farming which lasted his entire life.

After graduating from Royalton Hartland Central School Roy began working at Harrison Radiator Company. In 1951, he joined the United States Army under the Air Force Engineers Unit in Greenland. Roy matriculated at Cornell University and received his BS in Agricultural Economics. After graduating from Cornell, he was on staff in the Agricultural Economics Department at Cornell fortunately working for an outstanding mentor and Professor, Dr. George Conneman. Roy completed his graduate studies at Cornell and SUNY Cortland.

His experiences for 27 years teaching at Ovid Central School which became South Seneca, gave him many fond memories which were discussed many, many times since his retirement from teaching in 1992.

Roy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Trumansburg. Over the years he was very active on the Trustee’s and Deacon’s Boards, church committees, taught Junior High Sunday School, and was the church Treasurer for many years.

Roy’s family was able to do extensive camping and traveling, visiting many states. He had a variety of interests including the Ithaca Farmer’s Market, wood working making furniture, playing the guitar and singing Gospel music, square dancing, and had his FCC Amateur Radio License.

Roy showered endless love to his wife, Barbara, son, Mark, and the rest of his family. He and Barbara were thrilled when Mark met his wife, Teresa, and were even more excited upon the arrival of their grandchildren, David and Natalie. He loved giving his time, love, and guidance to his grandchildren.

His walk with the Lord was evident each and every day. Roy was a wonderful example to follow and was always caring and reaching out to others. Memories are wonderful and will fill those empty little spaces.

Roy is survived by his wife of 57 ½ years, Barbara Flemming; a daughter in law, Teresa Flemming; two grandchildren, David and Natalie Flemming; a sister, Joyce Bayles; brother in law, Walter Pastuch; two sisters in law, Beatrice Haynes and Barbara Flemming; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his son, Mark Flemming; sister, Jean Pastuch; brother, Donald Flemming; two sisters in law, Ruth Clute and Elisabeth Steimer, and four brothers in law, William Bayles, Clinton Haynes, Donald Clute, and Lawrence Steimer.

The family will be present to receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm on Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg, NY. A Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held at 1:00pm on January 13, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 4443 Seneca Road, Trumansburg, NY. Prayers of Committal will be held in the Spring 2015 in Hartland Central Cemetery.
