Shirley McAneny, 90, passed away after a brief illness March 29, 2022.
Born in Bay Shore, NY on August 30, 1931, to Basil Chambers Kime and Bessie (Raymond) Kime, Shirley and her recently deceased husband, Bill McAneny, were an integral part of the Trumansburg community since retiring to the area from Long Island in 2000.
Shirley was active in the community and made many good friends in Trumansburg. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the Trumansburg Philomathic Library, and Taughannock Garden Club (former president), as well as other community groups and events.
Shirley graduated Bay Shore High School, NY in 1949 and went on to attend New York’s prestigious Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School and University of Vermont, where she was an active member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was working in Manhattan when she and Bill wed in 1954. Bill was in the Army and the couple lived briefly in Georgia and Washington D.C. until his discharge in 1956.
The couple moved back to Long Island, settling in Huntington, NY and raised four children, during which time Shirley was active with her sorority sisters, held several office manager positions, ran a pre-school, did the annual school census, co-authored a book, played competitive tennis, ran 10K races, rowed with the local crew club, and played golf. She also played hand bells at two churches, was secretary for the Huntington Audubon Society sector, and participated in the annual bird count each January for 50 years.
Shirley and Bill loved being outdoors, travel adventure, bird watching and having weekly dinners with their Trumansburg friends and neighbors. They visited all 50 US states via car, railroad and air with overseas excursions to South Africa, Canada, Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, the Galapagos, Iceland, and Mexico – identifying and counting birds all along the routes. On a good day, they would log 50 species.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Bill who passed October 2021. She is survived by their four children: Elizabeth, Margaret, Peter (wife Noriko) and Alice; and five grandsons.
A Memorial Gathering will be announced at later date.
The family asks those that would like to make a donation in Shirley’s memory to kindly consider the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850 or visit (birds.cornell.edu).
