Waite, Jay, Thornton Jr.

Jay Thornton Waite, Jr., "Hap" of Interlaken, passed away at the Cayuga Medical Center on Friday, April 15, 2005 at the age of 81.

Born on March 13, 1924 in Ithaca, New York, Hap was the son of Jay Thornton Waite, Sr. and Netta Skelton Waite.

Hap was a taxicab driver for Terminal Taxi Company in Ithaca for many years before accepting a position at the Statler Hotel on the Cornell University campus. Hap also received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942.

In addition to his parents, Hap was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Agnes Waite in 1962 and his sister, Doris Lanning.

He is survived by two sons, Gary W. Waite of St. Marys, GA and Richard J. Waite of Trumansburg; one daughter, Debbie Waite of Ithaca; four grandchildren, Suzanne Schappi, Shelly Fredericks, Rick Waite and Heather Hipchen; two great-grandchildren, J.T. Fredericks and Jamie Schappi and one sister, Ruby Flint of Bellview, FL.

Graveside services will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Ithaca on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at 11:00 am.
