Walter C. Manheim lifelong resident of the Trumansburg area passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Thursday, January 9, 2014, at the age of 85.
Walter was born in Enfield on May 22, 1928. He honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1946 to 1947. After working for Babcock Hatchery for 20 years, Walter went to work in the Barnes Hall Post Market at Cornell University for 10 years. Following his retirement from Cornell, Walter enjoyed working part-time as a greeter at The Cornell Store.
He was a member of the Trumansburg United Methodist Church and Trumansburg American Legion Post 770. Walter’s true joy in life was spending time with his family. He was especially proud of his two grandsons.
Walter is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy J. Manheim of Trumansburg; two sons, John Walter (Joan) Manheim of Trumansburg and Thomas Clair (Christine) Manheim of Interlaken; two grandsons, Timothy John Manheim and Brandon Scott Manheim; sister, Betty (William) Bach of Minnesota; nieces and nephews; the Housworth family; and his beloved dog companion, Joey. He was preceded in death by his foster parents, Mary and Abe Updike; two brothers, George and Jim Manheim; and very special lifelong friends, Hank and Gene Housworth.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church.
