White, James, L Jr.

d. September 16, 2005

James L. White, Jr., age 80, of 10 S. Seneca Street, Waterloo, (formerly of Trumansburg and Interlaken), passed away at home on Friday, September 16, 2005, following a lengthy illness.

Born on October 17, 1924 in Ithaca, New York, Jim was the son of James L. White, Sr. and Gertrude Thomas White.

He worked for the W.T. Pritchard Dealership for 18 years, when it was located in Interlaken. Jim also worked for the Tompkins County Highway Dept. for 3 years and retired from Cornell following 20 years of service.

Jim joined the U S Navy in 1942 and faithfully served his country throughout WW II, receiving an Honorable Discharge on November 28, 1945. Again, on May 17, 1950, Jim answered the call for help as he joined the U S Navy to serve in the Korean Conflict. He received a second Honorable Discharge on May 16, 1954. Jim was proud to have had the opportunity to defend his country and was honored to be a long-time member of the Arthur E. Bouton American Legion Post #770 in Trumansburg. Anyone who knew Jim undoubtedly heard about his war experiences. These memorable wartime events (as well as fishing excursion stories) were related with an animated enthusiasm that made Jim a master story-teller. Those who knew Jim well not only looked forward to hearing another story but also learned to be cautious so as not to fall victim to one of his many practical jokes. Jim's laughter and light-heartedness will be missed.

Preceding Jim in death were his daughter, Barbara White in May of 1953 and his devoted wife, Faith M. VanWagenen White who died in May of 1994. He is survived by two daughters, Lorrie (George) May of Ithaca and Libby (Craig) Hunsicker of Waterloo; five grandchildren, Michael, Molly and Timothy Bashaw and Leah and Scott VanNostrand; four great-grandchildren, Julia, Abigail, Isaiah and Jack; one brother-in-law, William Glidden of Trumansburg; one cousin and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Trumansburg American Legion, 4431 Seneca Road in Trumansburg on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at 2:00 pm with Jim's son-in-law, Craig Hunsicker officiating. The family invites everyone present to share their stories and memories of Jim during the service. The Memorial Service will be concluded with a military honor tribute performed by the American Legion's Ritual Team. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Legion.

Contributions in Jim's memory may be directed to the Trumansburg American Legion, P.O. Box 456, Trumansburg, NY 14886.

The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. 1-888-534-5446.
