H. William "Bill" Smith of 3292 Waterburg Road, Trumansburg, passed away at the Cayuga Medical Center on Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at the age of 81.
On January 7, 1925, Bill was born to Harold N. and Mary Bower Smith in the family farmhouse, where he would eventually become the fourth generation Smith to work those very lands. Before and after his graduation from the Trumansburg High School in 1942, Bill's heart was set on successfully continuing the legacy of The Smith Farm, which began in 1835. Bill was a natural in the seat of his IH tractor and could fix anything that broke. He truly lived by his favorite saying, "he that plows should plow in hope", which comes from 1 Corinthians in the Bible. He was pleased to have had the opportunity to work side by side with his son, Dan, in the operation of their farm over his lifetime.
Bill was proud of his 12 years of service on the Town of Ulysses Board and enjoyed a long-term membership at the Trumansburg Golf Course. He was also a 50 year member of the Trumansburg Lodge #157 F&AM. In his scarce "free time", Bill might be found hunting or snowmobiling. Family and friends were paramount to Bill and he would go to any lengths to help someone out. The Smith's dining room table often resembled Grand Central Station with news of the day, weather and crop reports, hot coffee and a heart-warming smile and handshake from Bill as you entered his home.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bob. Bill is survived by his devoted wife, of 51 years, Laura Peter Smith; two sons, Jeffrey W. of Ft. Myers, FL and Daniel H. of Trumansburg; one daughter, Mary Helen (Bruce) Myrdek of Lafayette; three grandchildren, Hanna, Caroline and Douglas; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Loris Smith, and many other close friends, and relatives.
In keeping with Bill's wishes, no public calling hours have been scheduled.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 1:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses in Trumansburg with the Rev. Jeffrey S. Kellam officiating. A Masonic Service will be conducted immediately following the Memorial Service - also in the church sanctuary.
The family invites their friends to a reception, at 3292 Waterburg Road, following the church services.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Bill in the form of a contribution are asked to consider the Trumansburg Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 418, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
