Wilma “June”  Hendrix

d. June 13, 2003

Wilma "June" Hendrix of 8744 Townline Road, Interlaken passed away at the Cayuga Medical Center on Friday, June 13, 2003 at the age of 78.

Born on October 21, 1924 in Fabius, New York, June was the daughter of Raymond and Effa Woodford Ike. She graduated from the Interlaken Central School in 1944 and married Gordon J. Hendrix on September 17, 1945.

Without complaint June worked side by side with her husband on their farm. When many of the buildings were destroyed by fire in 1966 the couple worked tirelessly to rebuild each and every one. While Gordon was working she ran the entire farm, often balancing a child or two on her knee while driving the tractor.

Nurturing her family was at the center of June's life. Whenever her children participated in a horse show or other activity June was always in attendance. Her kind and caring manner attracted children and made June the perfect babysitter for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many others over the years. She was affectionately called grandma by many and was a friend to all who knew her. June's warm smile and words of encouragement will be sorely missed.

June was passionate about horses and was a long time member of the Lake Country Horseman's Assn., serving as treasurer for many years. She was also a NASCAR enthusiast who would welcome company to watch the race as long as they were Dale Earnhardt fans.

Preceding June in death were her husband, Gordon J. on December 4, 1997 and 2 brothers, Karl and Jerry Ike. She is survived by 3 sons, Richard "Skip" (Joline) of Interlaken, Dale "Buzz" (Lynn) of Ovid and Raymond Dean (Leslie) of Interlaken; 3 daughters, Gail Hendrix of Interlaken, Lois (Mark) Handzel of Colonial Heights, VA and Joan Hendrix (Scott Smith) of Interlaken; 8 grandchildren, Stacy Hendrix (Colin MacDonald), Amie Hendrix, Matthew and Erin Handzel, Daisy Dean and Caitlyn, Christopher and Scott Smith; 2 great-grandchildren, Kiersten Hendrix and Jenna MacDonald; 5 brothers, Owen (Ruth) Ike of Interlaken, Russell (Jane) Ike of Lodi, RC (Darlene) Ike of Horseheads, Richard Ike of Interlaken and Roy (Connie) Ike of Interlaken; 5 sisters, Grace Terry of Interlaken, Illa Reynolds of Ovid, Lelia (John) Terry of Interlaken, Rhea Ike of Lodi and Della Ike of Sherburne; 2 brothers-in-law, Gerald (Alice) Hendrix of Covert and George Boyer of Portville; 3 sisters-in-law, Maude Post and Delores Hendrix both of Trumansburg and Harria Dailey of St. Louis, MO and many nieces and nephews. June was also survived by extended family, Jimmy (Shari) Carter and their children Jamie and Jayci of Ovid as well as Jen and Stacy Westervelt of Interlaken.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church on Monday, June 16, 2003 at 7:00 pm. Prayers of Committal at the West Lodi Cemetery will be private.

In keeping with June's wishes, no public calling hours have been scheduled.

Contributions in June's memory may be directed to the Lake Country Horseman's Assn., ATTN: Bill Bishop, P. O. Box 66, Interlaken, NY 14847 or to the Arthritis Foundation, CNY Chapter, 5858 East Molloy Road, Suite 123, Syracuse, New York 13211.
